Peoples Pops Are Tops…Just Don’t Call Them Peoples Popsicles!

We’ve always wanted to try the all natural Peoples Pops after reading about them last year. But since they weren’t available anywhere but Brooklyn, we kind of gave up trying. However, there’s nothing better than a fresh, fruity delicious ice pop when it’s ninety degrees out – so, one Magpie convinced another Magpie, who convinced another Magpie who convinced another Magpie, to venture across the Brooklyn Bridge and go to the only place we knew we could get our hands on one of these ice suckers…the Brooklyn Flea Market (fortunately it’s indoors and air conditioned). As soon as we entered, stationed at a stand with a block of ice (to make flavored sno-cones, obvs) and a mini freezer, were David Carrell and his trusty sidekick (we didn’t get his name…). David told us he was the owner and creator of these fruit pops and suggested we sample all three flavors that were featured that day. With very little arm twisting …we grabbed a straight-up raspberry (which is made with fresh raspberry puree and fruit juice), an apricot and lavender blend (with chunks of real apricots in every bite!), and a rhubarb jasmine (yes rhubarb!), which was sooo refreshing!
The other fun part about going to get the pops at the Brooklyn Flea Market was that we were able to check out the different booths while devouring our pops. And we ended up having a successful shopping experience as well. They’ll be there at the Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday of the summer season. We found out a couple of things after talking with Dave that we promised to pass on to our fellow Magpies. 1) Peoples Pops are also sold at Chelsea Market (who knew?), the Whole Foods on West 97th Street (in the gelato bar!)…
and will be opening on the High Line on July 25th (the one and only – so desperately needed! – refreshment to be sold there) – so if you aren’t an adventurous Magpie, you can get a taste of this icy deliciousness right here in NYC; 2) The name Popsicle is owned by Unilever and is a registered trademark and to avoid a lawsuit Peoples Popsicles became Peoples Pops; and most importantly… 3) Dave’s a really nice guy!
